FSB wants more Internet control

The Russian Federal Security Service wants to be able close down “extremist” websites and commit web providers to keep records of users.

The FSB has now presented proposed amendments to the federal Law in Information, newspaper Vedomosti reports. It is a working group under the Ministry of Communications which is organizing the work. According to the FSB’s proposals, Internet providers will be committed to close down website considered “extremist” without court rule. Three days after having received a letter of approval from the prosecutor’s office, the FSB will be entitled to close down the site. The providers will also be committed to keep record of users and their web movements for six months. According to Vedomosti, a number of Russian Internet providers already now cooperate closely with the security services.
