Hammerfest was one of the municipalities with lowest emission of greenhouse gasses in 2006. In the periode 1991-2007, emissions in Hammerfest rose with staggering 6807 percent.
Melkøya plant, producing LNG from the Snøhvit natural gas field in the Barents Sea was opened in Hammerfest in 2007.
According to the Norwegian National Bureau of Statistics, Porsgrunn is the Norwegian municipality that emits most greenhouse gasses per year. On second place comes Lindås, where the Mongstad plant is located.
