Fighting grey economy on both sides of the border

Employers’ unions and tax authorities in Murmansk and Finnmark have agreed to intensify the fight against grey economy.

Location

Representatives from Norwegian and Russian employers’ unions, trade unions and tax authorities met in Murmansk last week to discuss the problem with grey economy on both sides of the border, B-port reports.

- It is difficult to take an exact account of the volume of the grey economy, but we are talking about no less than 10 billion NOK, said Helge Ove Aune from the North Norway Tax Inspection.

Norway has intensified the fight against the grey economy the last years. A nationwide campaign stating that gray business is theft has been rather successful.

The participants in the meeting believe that exchange of information between the two countries is hampered by bureaucracy on the federal level, and that tax control would be more efficient if it was to be held on a regional level. Murmansk and Finnmark regional branches of the two countries’ major employers’ unions RSPP and NHO have had a fruitful cooperation already for several years.
