Duma ratifies border-area visa-freedom with Norway

The Norwegian border to Russia will be the first of the external Schengen borders that will be partly open for visa free travel

The bill opens for visa-freedom for residents in a 30 kilometre zone on each side of the border.

- The agreement will facilitate the development of good neighbourly relations with Russia’s northern neighbour. It will increase the contacts between people and would contribute to develop economic, humanitarian and scientific ties, said Valery Yazev, Vice Speaker of the State Duma when he on Thursday opened for discussion on ratification of the agreement with Norway.

The documents and schedule for ratification is published on the portal of the State Duma.

The geographical zone from where the population can cross the border without valid visa includes the Norwegian town of Kirkenes and the two Russian towns of Nikel, Zapolyarny, Pechenga and Korzunovo on the Kola Peninsula.

The fee for obtaining the visa-free ID-card will be €20, with exemptions for full-time students, people older than 60 years and minors. They will get the ID-card free of charge.
