Suggest export tax on nickel

A 5% duty rate on nickel exports could be reintroduced to support Russia’s state budget.

Norilsk-Nickel is again posting net profit and a governmental commission says the state should have a bigger share of the billion worth revenues.

The commission suggest introducing the nickel exports duty from December 1st. this year, reports RIA Novosti. Norilsk-Nickel is the world’s biggest producer of nickel and operates mines and metallurgical factories in the cities of Nikel, Zapolyarny and Monchegorsk on the Kola Peninsula.

Export duty on nickel was first introduced in 2007, but cancelled again earlier in 2009. Norilsk-Nickel posted a net loss in Q1 this year, but already in Q2 (April-June) the company could again post a multi-billion net profit. RIA Novosti reported in July that Norilsk-Nickel posted a net profit of 52 billion rubles (USD 1.65 billion).
