New leakage from Finnish Talvivaara mine

Stoptalvivaara.org demands the Finnish government to cancel and revoke the environmental permit of Talvivaara mining company.

2,000 – 3,000 cubic meters of waste waters are leaking from a gypsum chamber of the Talvivaara nickel mine every hour.

Location

The leakage started on Sunday night, the Center of economic development, transport and environment (ELY-keskus) reported. The gypsum chamber stores 500,000 cubic meters of gypsum.

The Talvivaara polymetallic and uranium mine in Sotkamo was granted a license to mine nickel in 2006. Talvivaara has since proven itself to be a hazard for water systems on both sides of the watershed, says stoptalvevaara.org.

Talvivaara mine is located in 80 kms from the Russian border with Republic of Karelia.

The mine became the world famous in November 2012, when uranium was found in the waste waters in the result of an accident. The concentration of uranium those days raised 50 times, the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) reported.

It was the biggest environmental catastrophe ever happened in Finland.
