Statoil goes Arctic (Illustration by BarentsObserver)

Statoil believes the Havis field in the Barents Sea might hide a treasure.

Location

The Norwegian oil company started drilling at the field in December and maintains that the likelihood of a major finding is “significant”. The Havis field is located only about eight kilometers from the Skrugard structure, the big field discovered by the company in 2011.

-The Skrugard field brought new optimism about exploration in the Barents Sea and is a potential door opener to a new oil province, company Director for Development and Production on the Norwegian shelf, Øystein Michelsen, says in a press release.

Statoil has earlied indicated that Havis could hide as much oil as Skrugard, that is about 250 million barrelse of oil equivalents.

-The Skrugard field is not only an isolated discovery, it has the potential to open a new oil province up there, Statoil Senior Vice President for exploration Gro Gunleiksrud Haatvedt says to DN.no.

The results from the drilling at Havis are expected in the course of few weeks.

The year 2011 was exceptionally good for Statoil. Not only was Skrugard discovered, the company also made the giant Aldous/Avaldsnes discovery in the North Sea. The latter was the biggest offshore discovery made worldwide in 2011.
