Speaking at the Murmansk Economic Forum today, parliament speaker Yevgenii Nikora highlighted the important role of the regional legislators. He also stressed that local authorities and legislators in the region must prepare themselves for the new times, mentioning several of the municipalities in the region, among them the Pechenga Rayon on the border to Norway and Finland. The speaker also called for the elaboration of a new regional programme on oil and gas development, and underlined that the offshore petroleum resources in the area must be developed in a way which meets environmental standards and help the region develop positively.
