Commenting on a newly adopted federal programme on energy saving and efficiency, Governor Dmitriyenko on Wednesday told journalists that the energy consumption of the regional economy in Murmansk will be cut by 40 percent by year 2020.
-This will be an important step on the path towards modernization of production and better competitiveness of our companies, the governor underlines in a press release from the regional administration.
The government in Murmansk in spring 2010 adopted a regional programme on energy saving and efficiency. Also a number of municipal programmes have been adopted.
Murmansk Oblast is today a surplus producer of power. About 60 percent of the power generated in the region comes from the Kola Nuclear Power Plant.

Similar energy saving programmes have been introduced by other regions in Northwest Russia. As previously reported, the Republic of Karelia is currently investing in peat production and in small-scale hydro power stations.
