A statement from the two companies reads that the transport of cars and cargo containers is to increase by 50 percent over the next few months, YLE reports. In addition, the passenger target for the new high-speed Allegro train connection between Helsinki and St. Petersburg has been raised to 250,000, the Finnish broadcaster informs.

The statement was made this week after a meeting in Moscow between Russian Railways’ Vice-President Vadim Morozov and Mikael Aro, President of the Finnish railway company VR Group Ltd. A memorandum of intent signed by the two leaders include an intention to create and offer to the international transport market a competitive transport product, carrying cargo in container trains between Russia and Finland, a press release from the Russian Railways reads.

Both passenger trains and rail cargo in Finland are operated by the private state-owned VR Group. Russia is Finland’s most international partner regarding railway traffic. The freight traffic is much more intensive between Russia and Finland, compared to between Sweden and Finland and there are several daily passenger trains between Russia and Finland, but none between Sweden and Finland.
