More than three billion RUB have been wasted in bribes over the last year, prosecutor Sergei Fridinsky says to Interfax. That is more than the double of estimates for 2008.

According to Newsru.com, a total of eight Russian generals have been dismissed and charged in the course of 2009. They got between three and five years behind bars, the news agency reports.

President Medvedev has ordered the military to take measures to cope with the problem and a sociological study has been initiated to map the problem, Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports. The results from the study, which takes on different weapon branches and military districts, have not yet been made public. However, sources say to the newspaper that results and figures confirm the serious problem.
