Northern fleet vessels fight pirates

Admiral Chabanenko

Russia’s anti-piracy mission off the Horn of Africa was resumed on Monday with two warships from Severomorsk.

Location

The destroyer Admiral Chabanenko and a support vessel will start escorting commercial convoys off the African coast, a Navy spokesman told RIA-Novosti.

In January this year, BarentsObserver reported that another of Russia’s Northern fleet vessels, the destroyer Admiral Levcenko, was to participate in the anti-piracy mission outside Somalia.

Also, the head ship of Russia’s Northern fleet, the nuclear-powered cruiser Pyotr Veliky, participated in the anti-piracy mission in the beginning of the year. BarentsObserver reported that the vessel’s Spetsnaz unit intercepted, boarded and disarmed a group of pirate boats trying to board a transport vessel. Ten pirates were detained and the crew on “Pyotr Veliky” took their three boats as a trophy.
