People abandon small villages in Nenets AO

The Nenets AO

Another three villages in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug will be left abandoned this year.

Location

A growing number of small remote villages in the far northern Nenets Autonomous Okrug are being left abandoned. Recently, the few remaining families in the Naryga village decided to move to the bigger neighbouring Telviska. Also another two villages, the Chernaya and Oskolkovo, are also being left deserted. The trend is unlikely to stop there, and several more villages will in the years ahead be left by their few remaining inhabitants, newspaper Pravda Severa reports. The resource-rich but sparsely populated Nenets Autonomous Okrug has only about 45,000 inhabitants, half of whom live in regional capital Naryan-Mar.
