Medvedev’s election reform project

Russian President Medvedev intends to increase the number of political parties in the country’s legislative assembly by lowering the party election barrier from seven to three percent, newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports.

According to a source close to the president, Medvedev will not do with “cosmetic repairs of the political system”. He intends to lower the election barrier from today’s seven to five, or even three percent, the newspaper writes. The goal of the president secure equal rights for all parties and to stimulate the creation of new political structures, the source maintains. The reform might be implemented by 2011, the president is reported to have stated. The reform will, if implemented, be a major challenge for the United Russia party, which today has close to total control over all legislative processes in the country.
