Norilsk Nickel boost from high platinum demands

Major Chinese demands have lifted prices on platinum to last October level. That is good news for Norilsk Nickel’s mining subsidiary in Murmansk Oblast.

Location

The financial turbulence of late 2008 brought the metal to a low of 771 USD per ounce in October from a high of 2,250 USD in May 2008. Last Friday platinum traded at 1,153 USD an ounce, the Moscow Times reports. That is good news for the world’s biggest producer of the metal, Norilsk Nickel. The Kolskaya GMK, the company’s subsidiary in the Kola Peninsula, accounts for the lion’s share of the platinum production.
