NATO, Russia again talk

The NATO-Russia Council yesterday resumed cooperation with a first official meeting on ambassador-level.

Location

The meeting comes after an informal council meeting at the level of foreign ministers in Oslo 26 April. A formal foreign minister meeting is planned held in the course of May.

In yesterday’s meeting, Russian Permanent Representative to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, presented several proposals on how to overcome the crisis in NATO-Russia relations. Mr. Rogozin did however not want to comment on the contents of the proposals, Itar-Tass reports.

-The political blindness of NATO, which does not see contemporary realities, turns the alliance into a blinded rhinoceros, Mr. Rogozin told the news agency. The resumed talks between NATO and Russia come after NATO froze all official contacts with the Russians following the war in Georgia last year.

Despite the resumed talks and positive developments in NATO-Russia relations, NATO in the period 6 May to 1 June plans allied military training in Georgia.

That has been negatively assessed by the Russians. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has described the training as “harmful”, Reuters reports.
