“More spectacular than ever”

Barents Spektakel 2008

At the end of January the Norwegian border town of Kirkenes will be the venue for one of the Barents Region’s largest cultural festivals, the Barents Spektakel.

Location

It is the Norwegian company Pikene på Broen, which is organizing the Barents Spektakel cultural festival as always. The festival has grown every year and will this year be the largest ever.

– Our goal is not only to make a festival for the Barents Region, but a festival which gains international attention, says festival manager Luba Kuzovnikova to local newspaper Sør-Varanger Avis.

At the festival there will be participants from all over the Barents Region. Many of the artists and musicians that are popular in Russia have never performed in Norway, and vice versa. To present such artists from both sides of the Norwegian-Russian border and to be a meeting place for culture in the Barents Region, are some of the most important goals of the Barents Spektakel.

This year’s event has been given the theme title, Borders – Control or Rock’n roll. The headline reveals that music is an important part of this year’s programme. However, several art projects will be presented during the spektakel, there will be theatrical performances, discussion meetings, two Norwegian ministers will visit the festival and there will be several exhibitions in and around the town. All together the festival will transform the small town from its normally quiet atmosphere into a four day cultural explosion.
