New apatite plant in Murmansk

The Murmansk regional administration has given its approval of the planned construction of a new apatite mine and processing plant in the central parts of the Kola Peninsula.

Location

The plant to be built and operated by the Severo-Zapadnaya Fosfornaya Kompaniya will be located in the Olenii Ruchey area, about 20 km northeast of Kirovsk, Regnum reports.

Both an open pit and an underground mine will be built. The plant construction will be made in two phases, the first of which will start in 2012 and the second in 2018. The ore processing capacity of each phase will be three million tons, a press release from the company informs.

The company, a part of the Akron group, has been applying for permissions to extract ore on the site since 2005.

Apatite industry is a vital part of the economy of Murmansk Oblast. The company Apatit – one of Russia’s biggest producers of fertilizers – is running several plant in the peninsula.

Apatite is a group of phosphate minerals used extensively in the production of fertilizers.
