Military activities is not the way to resolve Arctic disputes, chairman of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC) Anton Vasiliev says to Regnum. He argues that speculations about a possible “third world war” over Arctic resources are “provocative”.

The senior diplomat underlines that the main way how to resolve Arctic problems goes through cooperation, and that this especially concerns climate problems. He also maintains that the Barents Euro-Arctic Council and the Arctic Council both are important cooperation bodies in the region.

The BEAC chairman highlights that there now is a “positive process on reaching agreement on all problem issues”.

Over the last few years, the international interest in the Arctic has surged following ice melting and the opening up for more shipping and industrial activities. Mr. Vasiliev believes the interest in the Arctic will continue to increase as countries develop Arctic strategies on industrial and economical activities in the region.
