One of Russia’s biggest gas projects postponed

The Yamal Peninsula

The development of the Yuzhno-Tambeyskoe gas field in the Yamal Peninsula will be started no earlier than year 2024, Gazprom says. That information is likely to disappoint foreign companies Shell and ENI, which both seek stakes in the project.

Location

In its General Development Plan for the Russian gas industry, Gazprom confirms that the huge fields will be developed in the period 2024-2027, newspaper Vedomosti reports. The Yuzhno-Tambeyskoe field is believed to contain about 1,2 trillion cubic meters of gas and 40-60 million tons of gas condensate.

When Shell CEO Jeroen van der Veer signed a cooperation protocol with Gazprom this summer, the Yuzhno-Tambeyskoe fields was one of the project priorities. Now, Shell’s plans in the region might be put on hold.

-We have said that Shell can become partner when the project develops, however there is still no project, Gazprom’s Sergey Kuprianov says to Vedomosti.

Also ENI CEO Paolo Scaroni expressed interest in the field when visiting the region this last month.

The license to the Yuzhno-Tambeyskoe field is owned by the company SPG Yamal, in which Gazprom controls a 25 percent stake. The remaining shares are controlled by structures close to Alisher Usmanov’s Gazmetall company.

The project development costs are estimated to up to 6 billion USD (2006). The field is lcoated along the Ob Bay on the eastern coast of Yamal Peninsula.

Gazprom is currently in the development phase of the Bovanenkovskoe field, a project located further south in the peninsula near the Baydarata Bay. The Bovanenkovo field is to start production in year 2011 and provide an annual 115 billion cubic meter of gas.
