Arkhangelsk calls back its man in Moscow

Nikolay Kiselyov

Nikolay Kiselyov, the former governor of Arkhangelsk Oblast, will be deprived his current position as the region’s representative in the Federation Council, the upper house in the federal parliament.

Location

Governor Ilya Mikhalchuk this week unexpectedly announced that Mr. Kiselyov will be replaced by Nikolay Lvov, a current member of the regional assembly. No reason for the replacement is revealed. It is no secret however that the appointment of Kiselyov made in late May this year was highly controversial. The former governor is suspected of having been involved in a serious corruption case. He has also been strongly criticised for his handling of the conflict with former Arkhangelsk city mayor Aleksandr Donskoy. With his appointment as senator, Mr. Kiselyov got immunity. That now comes to and end.
