Russians should care less about the cult of money, success and economic comfort, the Ministry of Communications and Media believes. Now, the ministry intends to gradually start changing peoples’ way of thinking, newspaper RBC Daily reports “The media continues to propagate the values of the consumer society. Their work is founded on sensation, sex, scandal and fear”, the ministry maintains. The new value priorities should rather be based on topics like education, health, labour motivation, social activities, patriotism and intellectual and cultural skills. The new value hierarchy will not be imposed on Russians from above, but with the help of the mass media, the ministry maintains. The authors of the document, obtained by RBC Daily, expect that the media institutions voluntarily change priorities in their coverage. The obedient media will be saluted by the state, while the disobedient could expect trouble from state officials.
