EU-Russia relations in jeopardy

The EU and Russia

The conflict between Russia and Georgia could put EU-Russia negotiations over a new partnership agreement and visa-free travel in jeopardy.

Location

When EU foreign ministers meet in Brussels this Wednesday, the suspension of EU-Russia negotiations on a new bilateral pact, freezing talks on visa-free travel for Russian citizens and holding back EU humanitarian aid to Chechnya is likely to be discussed, EUobserver.com reports. The conflict between Russia and Georgia now threatens to result in a serious setback in the country’s relations with the EU. Relations are set to deteriorate further should Russian forces move all the way to Tbilisi in a bid to secure a regime change. Russia and the EU in this June’s summit in Khanti-Mansiisk decided to resume talks over a new partnership agreement. The first negotiation meeting was held already in early July. Both parts have also on several occasions repeated their interests in a visa-free travel regime.
