Russian mining and metallurgy giant Norilsk Nickel will open a new major mine outside Monchegorsk in the Kola Peninsula. The mine, which is to be ready for production in five years, will extract an annual 520,000 tons of ore, the company’s regional subsidiary Kolskaya GMK informs.

Location

The field “Vuruchchuayvench” is located near the company’s existing facilities in Monchegorsk, the company’s main processing site in the Kola Peninsula. The deposit has an estimated annual production capacity of 512,000 tons. Production period is estimated to 19 years, a press release from the company reads.

Kolskaya GMK is currently unfolding a major exploration campaign which is to last until year 2011. It is believed that the campaign might result in several major new findings and a significant extension of the company’s reserves.

Norilsk Nickel has since it started production in the Kola Peninsula extracted an estimated 2 million tons of nickel ore. The biggest part of the ore has been extracted in the “Tsentralny” mine outside the town of Zapolyarny. In 2004 the company opened its “Severny-Glubokii” underground mine, which is expected to replace the capacities of the “Tsentralny” as the latter runs out of reserves.
