High North policy under criticism

The Norwegian government’s High North policy is criticized by employees within the ministry of Foreign Affaires. The critics say that the government has presented ambitions for the High North which can never be realized.

In an internal memo in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affaires, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre are criticized for presenting too high ambitions for the High North policy. This has caused expectations in the province to be exaggerated. The goals outlined by the current Norwegian Government are impossible to fulfil even within two periods in office, is one of the arguments from the memo according to Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.

Støres leader for the High North policy, Geir Westgaard has also resigned from his position. According to himself he made this decision because his assignment was fulfilled. Howevere, in the memo, which came from the department working on the Westgaard project, it says that the High North policy is strong rhetorical, but lack a substance. There is a gap between the Governments promises and deliveries in the High North.
