Russian investors have acquired the shares of two motels in Rovaniemi in Finland, reports YLE Lapland. Also other locations in Lapland could soon be resort areas with cottages, after being both by investors from Russia. Plans include camping sites, motels and cottages.
The numbers of Russian tourists to Finland have skyrocket over the last decade. Investments by Russians into spa hotels and resort areas in the southern border areas around Lappeenranta and South Karelia are well known for years.
Last winter, BarentsObserver reported that more than 10.000 of the bed-nights in Rovaniemi last season were booked by Russians. So far this year, the numbers of border crossings from the Kola Peninsula to Lapland have increased by 41 percent as reported by BarentsObserver last week.
