New senator highlights energy and Arctic

Murmansk Governor Marina Kovtun is making Igor Chernyshenko her new man in Moscow.

Igor Chernyshenko is appointed new representative of Murmansk Oblast in the Federation Council.

“I will work for the lowering of the region’s dependency of heavy oil (mazut) and promote our participation in Arctic projects”, Chernyshenko underlined in a meeting with regional Governor Marina Kovtun, a press release reads.

67-year old Chernyshenko has background as long-serving member of the Russian State Duma. Since 2011, he has been member of the Murmansk regional Duma, where he has held the post as  Deputy Chair.

He takes over the senator’s seat from Andrey Guriev, the powerful businessman who represented Murmansk in the Council for 12 years.

Murmansk has two representatives in Federation Council, the upper house in the Russian parliament. The other senator is Vladimir Chub
