Jonas has been working for the Norwegian Barents Secretariat since 2008. He has a Masters Degree in Geography from NTNU in Trondheim from 2003. Between 2003 and 2008 he worked as a journalist in the local newspaper in Kirkenes, Sør-Varanger Avis.

“This is an important step towards total abolition of visa between Russia and the rest of Europe”, says Norway’s Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. A ceremony yesterday marked the introduction of visa-free travel for residents of the border area.

The dry dock around the wreck of the Russian cruiser “Murmansk” is now sealed. Within weeks the contractor will start the final phase of demolishing the old battleship.

The Norwegian investors in the Wenaas group are doing well on the Russian hotel market. In 2011 they had a record turnover of € 250 million.

Norway has spent €1.5 million on demanded temporary expansion of the Storskog border passing point in order to meet the increased traffic across the border to Russia.

Murmansk student Anton Kosterin was evicted from University after his election protests in December. Last week he won against Murmansk State Technical University in a regional court in Murmansk.

The Norwegian Barents Secretariat will over the next three years grant €18 million to people-to-people projects in the Barents Region. “This gives us a unique possibility to develop even better cross border relations in the north,” says Secretary General Rune Rafaelsen.

In eight years the number of inhabitants in the Murmansk Region has decreased by 97 000 people. Depopulation due to young people who migrate south is a huge problem for Murmansk region, says Vice Chairman of the Murmansk Regional Duma, Igor Chernyshenko .

21 year old Murmansk student Anton Kosterin protested against election fraud during the Russian Duma elections in december 2011, and was evicted from university. On March 21st Kosterin’s case is on trial in a district court in Murmansk.

MOSCOW: By large margin Vladmir Putin is the winner of the Russian presidential election 2012. On Sunday evening he was met by 100 000 celebrating supporters on the Manezhnaya Square next to the Kremlin.

The Stavanger region has over the last 40 years developed into one of the strongest energy clusters in Europe. Now Murmansk Oblasts has engaged in a close cooperation with the Norwegian oil capital.
