Cooperating about border checkpoint management

A new EU-Russian project is to help raise management standards at Russian border checkpoints.

Representatives of the EU Commission and the Russian Border Agency (Rosgranitsa) last week met in Moscow for the launch of the project.

The project, which will run until March 2011 has a budget of 600,000 euro and is being implemented jointly by the Federal Agency for Development of the State Border (Rosgranitsa) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a press release from the EU Delegation in Russia reads.

-We have one objective – to combine questions of security and thorough control with the rights and freedoms of the citizens, Rosgranitsa leader Dmitry Bezdelov highlighted in the meeting, a press release from the agency informs.

Russia has about 400 border checkpoints and up to 30 million people annually cross the border.
