EU Parliament wants visa-free travel with Russia

EU-Russian visa debate

The members of the European Parliament last week approved a resolution which supports the introduction of visa-free travel with Russia. However, the parliament sees no hurry in the issue.

The resolution does not call for immediate action, but instead states that introduction of a new travelling regime should be “a long-term objective”.

The parliament members also called on both parts to intensify talks on a new Partnership Agreement, which would regulate both economical cooperation, legal issues and basic rights, a press release from the legislative body reads.

The Parliament deputies also reiterated their demand that energy cooperation between the parts must be based on the EU Energy Charter, a document, which the Russian side is strongly against.

As previously reported, the visa issue was on top of the agenda in the recent Russia-EU Summit in Rostov-on-Don. Although no breakthrough was achieved, the meeting still managed to move the issue ahead.
