LKAB expands iron mining in northern Sweden

Swedish mining giant LKAB will over the next five years open three new iron mines in northern Sweden.

-This is a very good message, now we can open LKAB’s first new iron ore mine in 50 years, company leader Lars-Eric Aaro says in a press release. Swedish authorities have now granted the company the permissions to extend mining in the area.

According to the company, the first of the three mines – the Gruvberget mine, will be opened already late May this year. The other two mines, both of them in the municipality of Kiruna, will be opened before 2015.

Altogether, a total of 200-250 new jobs will be created in connection with the new mining, E24.se reports.
