People working in the church discovered the fire early Monday morning, Regnum reports. Fire fighters proved unable to rescue the church, the only in the town of about 18,000 people.
Located on a hill, the church was a visible building in the town centre. It was built in the early 1990s in the premises of a former shop.
The church fire is the second in the Pechenga Rayon in the last three years. In 2007, the Saint Trifon monastery in the town of Pechenga also burnt to the ground.
