Severodvinsk, world-known for its construction and repair of nuclear powered submarines, is the engineering capital in northern Russia. The city has two of Russia’s biggest shipyards, the Sevmash and Zvezdocka, but is short of alternative industries.
With its newly adopted investment plan, the city authorities intend to diversify local economy and overcome status as “monogorod”.
“New directions in industry must be developed and small and medium-sized businesses must actively be generated”, city Mayor Mikhail Gmyrin says in a press release. Both funding from private investors, credits, as well as money from federal and regional authorities, are to help the city fulfill the plan.
Regional Governor Ilya Mikhalchuk has approved the plan, and it is now on the table of federal Minister of Regional Development Viktor Basargin. The plan covers the period 2010-2020.
With its about 200 thousand inhabitants, Severodvinsk is the fourth biggest city in the Barents Region
