Governor of Murmansk Oblast Dmitry Dmitriyenko says the Russian-Norwegian agreement on local border traffic regime will help build contacts and trust and subsequently benefit both people and business in the area.

-Good neighbors need to communicate, and the more we communicate, the more we know [about eachother] and the better are opportunities for business, tourism and all specters of our lives, the governor says in a press release. –We get more trust between our countries, he adds.

As previously reported, the Russian and Norwegian foreign ministers last week signed an agreement on the introduction of a local border traffic regime in the two countries’ border areas. The agreement will make it possible for people living in a 30 km range from the border to travel without visas in the borderland areas.

Dmitriyenko also says that the border traffic agreement is a “logical continuation of the historic agreement on the delimitation of the disputed waters between the two countries”. This agreement ended the 40 year long unsettled issue of border delineation in the Barents Sea. The agreement was signed in Murmansk on 15 September this year.

Governor Dmitriyenko has high hopes for the border travelling agreement, and especially highlights the business opportunities following the better traveling conditions. –Potentially, this will lead to more investments, an increase in life standards and subsequently to the creation of new jobs, he says.
