The last conscripts joined the army in January. When the conscripts system ends later this spring, it is ending a 100 years Swedish system of compulsory service.
-This is the biggest renewal of Swedish defence and security policy for decades, according to Swedens’s Minister of Defence Sten Tolgfors, interviewed by Radio Sweden.
From now, all Swedish soldiers will either be full-time employees or on contract.
