Saami minority or Saami people?

The Sàmi flag

The new draft constitution in Sweden calls the Saami people a fully-fledged people and not a minority. That will strengthen the rights of the Saami, a law expert say.

Professor on international law Ove Bring says to Swedish Radio that the mentioning of the Saami as a people, and not only as a minority, in the constitution will have significant importance for the group, traditionally inhabiting the northern parts of the country. -Traditionally, a people has a stronger right to autonomy that a minority, the professor says. –A people has political rights, while an indigenous group has cultural rights, he adds. In a former draft to new constitution, the Saami were called an “ethnic minority”. That triggered strong reactions from the Saami community in the country. A new and revised draft was assessed by a parliament committee this week.
