Navy gets stronger in coastal waters

Russia constructs a fleet of new corvettes and frigates.

All challenges relating to the coastal zone will be resolved with the inclusion of the new vessels, both for the Northern Fleet, as well as for the other Russian Fleets, ”, Vice Admiral Vladimir Koroloyev says.

The new vessels – corvettes and frigates – will be built primarily by the Severnaya Verf in Sankt Petersburg. The yard on 1 February officially started the construction of both a new corvette and a frigate. The vessels named respectively the “Gremyashchii” and the “Admiral Golovko” are part of the Project 20385 and Project 22350, a press release from the yard reads.

According to Korolyev, a modernized version of the 20380 project, will help the Navy solve its problems in the Russian coastal waters.

The vessels will allow the Russian Fleet to look confidently into the future”, the Vice Admiral stressed at last week´s ceremony at the yard.

The Severnaya Verf will build a total of ten new corvettes. The first of the vessels, the “Steregushchii” and the “Soobrazitelny” were included in the fleet in respectively 2007 and 2011. In addition, the vessels “Boykii” and the “Stoykii” are under construction and soon ready for hand-over to the Navy, RIA Novosti reports. Yet another corvette is under construction in the far eastern yard of Amur.

According to the Severnaya Verf, the new corvettes exceed the capacities of the frigates operated by Western countries. Their main assets are their multi-functionality, high level of invisibility, high speed and improved anti-aircraft systems, Press Secretary of the yard, Olga Vilde, says to RIA Novosti.
