It is the travel section of Newsweek and CNN that have crossed the globe on outlook for secret wonders that have not got the attention they deserve. Among the nine marvels that are listed is the Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior and the other wooden constructions on the island in Lake Onega in Karelia.
The travel guide says you will experience a one-of-a-kind open air museum if you travel to Kizhi. There are nearly 90 wooden structures, including the churches, chapels and windmills. The most remarkable portion is Kizhi Pogost, with its 22 cascading bulbous cupolas fashioned from aspen shingles top the Church of the Transfiguration, built without a single nail.
