Joint Barents transport plan ready

The Barents Region needs better East-West communications. A joint transport plan for the region is now ready for presentation. Photo: Trude Pettersen

The main problem with the infrastructure in the Barents region is that it was developed during the Cold War. The networks have gone North-South, while it is transport routes between East and West that are needed now.

A proposition to a joint transport plan for the Barents region is now ready. An expert group of representatives from transport authorities in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia have been working on the plan since January.

We asked ourselves: “What would the transport system look like, if the Barents Region was one country?” says Torbjørn Naimak, Head of Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s Northern Region and leader of the export group, in a press release.

The economic development in the High North requires good transport solutions across national borders. National transport plans, strategic studies and bilateral studies have identified a need for a more integrated approach to the transport system across borders in the Barents region.

“The transport system in the Barents Region must be improved to meet the needs of people and business”, says Minister of Transport and Communications Marit Arnstad to NRK. “I look forward to receiving this joint transport plan and discussing it with my colleagues”.

The plan, that includes railway, roads, harbors and air traffic in the Barents region, will be presented in at a conference in Narvik, Norway next week. All four ministers of transport in the Barents countries will be present at the conference.
