In-depth Barents understanding for Rosneft

State oil company Rosneft is getting a comprehensive understanding of the Barents Sea geology.

The Russian company this summer assembled 3D seismic data from a 2800 square kilometer area in the Barents Sea. The company believes the area could hold 1.4 billion tons of oil and 1.9 trillion cubic meters of gas.

”As a result of the geological exploration works, we have got unique data about the structure of the ground […] which will form the basis for our preparation of drilling of prospective objects […]” Rosneft informs in a press release.

The mapping took place in the socalled West Prinovozemelsky license block, a 19,000 square km area in the northeastern part of the Barents Sea by the archipelago of Novaya Zemlya. The company estimates the hydrocarbon potentials of the area to 1,434 million tons of oil and 1.9 trillion cubic meters of gas.

In addition to the West Prinovozemelsky block, Rosneft this summer also planned to conduct seismic studies of the Perseevsky, South Russky, South Prinovozemelsky and West Matveevsky blocks. As previously reported, the blocks are believed to hold up to 2 billion tons of oil and several thousand billion cubic meters of natural gas.

The organization of geological surveys in the area is carried out by Rosneft subsidiary LLC “RN-Shelf-Arctic”. The mapping of the West Prinovozemelsky was conducted by the ship ”Geo Caribbean”.

Rosneft has several comprehensive Barents cooperation agreements with international oil companies, among them with Eni in the Fedysky license and with Statoil in the Perseevsky license.
