Patrushev Junior in charge of Prirazlomnaya

Andrey Patruchev, son of Russia’s powerful Security Council leader, takes over Gazprom Neft’s offshore department.

Location

The 34-year old son of Nikolay Patrushev has been appointed Deputy Head of Gazprom Neft with special responsibility for the oil company’s offshore projects, among them the Prirazlomnoye oil field in the Pechora Sea, Interfax reports.

With the new job, Patrushev Junior becomes one of the most powerful people in the Russian Arctic.

Gazprom Neft is so far the the only company producing oil on the Russian Arctic shelf. In addition to the Prirazlomnaya project, the company is preparing for production also at the nearby Dolginskoye field, a project developed in partnership with the Vietnamese state company Petrovietnam.

Like his father, Andrey Patrushev has a background closely associated with the FSB. In 2003, he graduated from the FSB Academy and later worked with the FSB department on industrial activities. Since 2006, he has worked in the oil industry, first with Rosneft and afterwards with Zarubezhneft. In the latter company, Patrushev followed up joint projects with Petrovietnam, among them in Russia’s Arctic Timan-Pechora provice. That experience will be of key importance as Gazprom Neft seeks to boost its relationship with the Vietnamese in Arctic waters.

Andrey Patrushev has since 2013 worked for Gazprom Dobycha Shelf, another key Gazprom subsidiary engaged in shelf activities.

Young Patrushev is not the only son of powerful political and security leaders taking top positions in Russian businesses. Recently, Ivan Sechin, the son of Rosneft President Igor Sechin, was awarded a medal by Vladimir Putin for “long service” in his father’s company.
