Interviewed by Bloomberg, StatoilHydro’s chief executive officer Helge Lund (photo), said Yamal is one of the areas where StatoilHydro can have competitive advantage.

One thing is to talk about an Arctic development and another thing is to actually do it. We’ve done it, primarily on the Snøhvit field, and we learned a lot, both positive and negative, Lund said in the Bloomberg interview.

StatoilHydro is the only company that operates a LNG-plant in the Arctic today. The Melkøya plant in Finnmark process natural gas from the Snøhvit field in the Barents Sea. The LNG-plant has encountered a number problems following technical errors, but StatoilHydro now says most technical challenges at the Melkøya LNG plant is solved.

StatoilHydro was one of the international oil majors that last week accepted the invitation from Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to come to the Yamal-Nenets district’s capital Salekhard to talk about gas exploration in the area.

As reported by BarentsObserver, Vladimir Putin said at the meeting that Russia could open for tax concession for capital invested in developing gas deposits on Yamal.
