Since the ship was in very bad state when the decision to remove it was done, there was no possibility to tow it. It had to be removed piece by piece, so a pier was built around it to enable the contractor to remove it.

The cruiser ran ashore outside Sørvær in Northern Norway on Christmas Eve 1994, as it broke during towing to India for scrapping.

The Cruiser Murmansk in the old days before it was decommissioned. It was built in 1955 and decommissioned in 1989. Five years later it was sold to India for scrapping, but never got that far.
