According to Chervyakova, her paper had planned to publish a story on April 6 where the town authorities were being accused for not fulfilling the government’s orders by failing to re-calculate the citizens’ payments for heating in 2009.
The day before the story was to be published, the redactor was called to the mayor’s office, where she, according to her own statement, was told by Subbotin not to print the story. When she refused to obey, the mayor allegedly threatened both her and her family.
Chervyakova did not want to say in details what the threats were, only that she and her family take all precautions - we only cross the street on green light and on crosswalks, we never stand close to open windows high over the ground, she told the journalists.
The story on the authorities’ neglect was not printed, and Chervyakova notified the police, the prosecuting authorities, the governor and the regional parliament about the incident, TV21 reports.
The mayor’s office refuses to comment the story today and says a press conference will be tomorrow.
