Little income from popular tourist attraction

North Cape

The local community in Nordkapp municipality, home to one of Norway’s most visited tourist attractions, North Cape, gets only fractions of the income from tourists who visit the plateau. Most of the money goes to Rica Hotels, owner of the tourist center Nordkapphallen.

The Norwegian-Swedish corporation Rica Hotels makes around 4.16 mill EUR per year on tickets to the tourist center on the North Cape plateau, NRK.no reports. Only 41.600 EUR of this money is transferred to the local community, represented by the municipal touring association.

Some local politicians have now started demanding that a larger share of the incomes should be re-allocated to the region. Socialist Left Party representative Torger Samuelsen threatens to block the road leading up to the plateau during height of the tourist season if Rica Hotels will not agree to share more of the wealth from the attraction.

Rica Hotels CEO Ole Jacob Wold says his company is not unwilling to share more of the incomes, but only through further development of the regional tourism sector.

North Cape is situated at the latitude of 71° North. The massive cliff, reaching 307 m above sea level, has for centuries attracted people from all over the world. North Cape marks the northernmost tip of Europe and represents the final frontier with the arctic sea.
