41 Russian aircrafts have passed Norway

Russian Tu-160

So far in 2009, 41 Russian aircrafts have been identified outside Norwegian territory. However, all Russian aircrafts have remained in international territory.

Location

Whenever a Russian aircraft is on the wings, the Norwegian Command Center at Reitan outside Bodø is notified. If the Russian aircrafts move too close towards Norwegian territory, the Norwegian fighter jet pilots are sent out on mission to secure Norwegian territory, which has happened 20 times this year, according to Norwegian newspaper Avisa Nordland

However, the Russian aircrafts have always remained in international territory, and there have been no conflicts of any kind between Norwegian and Russian pilots. In 2007 the Norwegian Air Force identified 88 Russian aircrafts outside Norwegian territory, while the number was 87 in 2008. Hence, there is no indication to any change in Russian activity.
