Murmansk might replace senator

Governor of Murmansk Oblast, Dmitry Dmitriyenko, will replace the long-serving Andrey Gurev – one of Russia’s richest men – as the region’s representative in the Federation Council, Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports.

Mr. Gurev has served as Murmansk senator for the last 18 years. According to the Forbes journal, the senator, who is also the owner of a major stake in fertilizer company Apatit, has a fortune of 650 million USD.

Now, the career of Sergey Gurev in the Federation Council, the upper house in the Russian parliament, might have come to an end. New Murmansk Governor Dmitry Dmitriyenko is likely to find a replacement, Regnum reports with reference to Nezavisimaya Gazeta.

As BarentsObserver has reported, Mr. Gurev has several times been rated among Russia’s best lobbyists.

It remains unclear who will be the new representative of Murmansk in the Federation Council. Among the people who have shown interest in the job is former governor Yury Yevdokimov.

The Federation Council, which long has been a body with members representing both regional administrations and powerful business, will in the year to come face a major reform. According to a reform approved earlier this year by President Medvedev, all the Federation Council members will from 2011 be elected members of regional parliaments.
