Arkhangelsk Governor Ilya Mikhalchuk this week announced that he will fire 30 percent of the employees in his regional administration in a bid to cut costs.

The measure is one of several in the region’s crisis plan. Governor Mikhalchuk says the “optimization” of staff is a necessary cost-cutting measure.

-We have to analyse the work efficiency of all units of the executive branch, the governor says, Bclass.ru reports. –There must be no duplication of operations in the work of the different departments, nor between regional and federal structures, he underlines.

The dismissals will first of all affect the officials who are not able to “work with people”, the newspaper writes. The governor wants his subordinates more out of their offices to meet with people in the region.

The cutting of staff now takes place all over Russia. As BarentsObserver recently reported, the Murmansk regional administration has announced a 10-percent cut in staff. The shrinking of the administrations comes after years of major growth in the number of state officials both in the regions and on the federal level.
