North-Atlantic focus in Nordic cooperation

North Atlantic

Iceland will take over the chairmanship of the Nordic Council of Ministers at the start of 2009. In the country’s recently presented program for the period, there is a strong focus on northern Atlantic issues.

Location

Iceland will have the chairmanship in the Nordic Council for one year, and will draw the Nordic focus towards the Northern Atlantic in this period. Iceland plans among other thing to create a map of vulnerable areas in the North Atlantic, which Iceland thinks is a premise for a good management of these areas as the activity of ships and extraction of resources intensifies.

For Iceland a dynamic North-Atlantic cooperation will be a priority, and that the Nordic countries establish good contact with Atlantic neighbours like Canada, Scotland and Ireland. An important focus for this cooperation will be research and development on ocean protection programmes and Arctic issues.
