The debate whether Tromsø will be able to apply as host city for the 2018 Winter Olympics or not, was put to rest this Monday. The Norwegian Sport Confederation decided today that it will not support an application from Tromsø. Without its support it will be impossible to finance the games, because the Government demands such support to guarantee for the financing.
Nine out of twelve members of the Sports Confederation board ruled against the Tromsø Olympics in their meeting on Monday. The main argument for the withdrawal of the bid is the recent news about the increased costs, and other factors which makes it difficult to arrange the Winter Olympics in the northern Norwegian city.
The Norwegian Sports Confederation had earlier been requested by Government to take on much more of the costs than previously expected. This subsequently made many of the conferedation’s member associations to get increasingly reluctant to the event.
